Custom Work Platform Delivered to Rio Tinto’s Dampier Operations

Star Aluminium has delivered a custom aluminium work platform to Rio Tinto’s Dampier operations in Western Australia, providing site crews with safe, elevated access to a heavy mobile crane. The project is a recent example of our engineering team designing equipment around a specific site brief rather than pulling from a standard catalogue.

“The team are very happy with them and they look great. Thank you for your support and delivering a quality product,” said Dean Austin from the Rio Tinto team.

Engineering Access Around the Machine

The crane’s cabin sits well above ground level, with no built-in access beyond a fixed step arrangement. Star Aluminium’s engineering team designed a mobile platform that positions safely alongside the machine, fitted with a folding stair run, full-height guardrails and a stable working deck for technicians entering and exiting the cabin. Locking castors allow the unit to be repositioned around the workshop as required, rather than staying fixed in one spot.

Work like this sits within our Custom Height Access Solutions range, where platforms, stair towers and maintenance access systems are engineered around a specific asset rather than adapted from an off-the-shelf product.

Built for Mining and Heavy Equipment Sites

Equipment operating on remote mine sites needs to handle daily use without becoming a maintenance burden of its own. Every custom platform we manufacture is produced within an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system and backed by our Lifetime Structural Warranty, the same standard that applies across our full product range. It’s an approach we bring to the mining sector generally, where reliable access to fixed plant and heavy machinery fleets has a direct impact on maintenance uptime.

Thank You, Rio Tinto

We’d like to thank Dean Austin and the wider Rio Tinto team at Dampier for their continued trust in Star Aluminium. From initial design through to fabrication and delivery, projects like this reflect what our team works toward every day: durable access equipment, engineered and manufactured here in Australia, built for the conditions it’s actually used in.
