Work at the Caboolture Landfill site moved quickly and the ground conditions changed just as fast. Winslow needed a staircase that wouldn’t fight the environment but would work with it. Instead of relying on improvised access or heavy steel structures that rust out in no time, they asked us to put together a practical aluminium solution suited to day-to-day use on a civil site.
Why Aluminium Made Sense on This Job
Anyone who has spent time on landfill or civil earthworks knows what the ground can be like—soft one day, washed out the next, and never completely level. Add machinery moving back and forth and a bit of Queensland weather, and simple access becomes a real challenge. To deal with all that, we built the staircase using 6061-T6 aluminium and expanded mesh treads. It drains well, grips well and doesn’t weigh a tonne. More importantly, it won’t start corroding the moment it’s exposed to wet soil or mud.
Designed to Meet Australian Standards Without Overcomplicating the Job
The staircase layout was sketched, reviewed and refined so it lined up with the relevant Australian Standards and the way the site actually operated. As Winslow adjusted parts of the work area, we made tweaks on our side too. No drama—aluminium is easy to work with, and the modular nature of the build meant changes didn’t derail progress.

A Straightforward, Safe Access Point Across Uneven Ground
Once in place, the staircase simply did what it was meant to do—give crews a stable way to move across areas that were constantly shifting. Because the structure is aluminium, there’s none of the ongoing upkeep that comes with painted steel, and it can be shifted or adjusted if the site reshapes over time.
For operations needing vertical access, our Work Platform Ladders range offers another option that complements installations like this one.
Adaptable Solutions for Evolving Site Conditions
Civil works rarely stay the same from week to week. Ground levels shift, access points move and project priorities change as the job progresses. Our focus is to create access systems that adapt to these conditions rather than hold the site back. In this case, the staircase was adjusted as needed so it matched the updated layout and continued to function smoothly throughout the work phase.

Need Access That Matches Your Site, Not the Other Way Around?
Star Aluminium builds access systems for environments where conditions shift, deadlines move and reliability actually matters. Whether it’s a landfill, a quarry, a processing facility or a utility site, we can help shape an access design that does the job without overengineering it.
